Tips to Improve Your Home’s Efficiency

Are you looking for ways to save money and reduce wasted energy. Yeah? Me, too!

Although some energy efficiency projects can be kind of big, there are plenty of inexpensive and easy things you can to do make your home more energy efficient—and save money on your utility bills.

  • Unplug appliances when not using them. This includes power strips.
  • Use cool water for laundry that isn’t very dirty. Save the hot water for things that matter like kitchen towels.
  • Get a HVAC check-up. Even if you don’t hire someone to inspect your HVAC, you can change the filter yourself.
  • Install a programmable thermostat so you don’t waste energy during off hours (when at work or asleep).
  • Clean registers and vents throughout the house.
  • Shut registers off in rooms you don’t use regularly.
  • Have a contractor check your duct work for leaks or blockages that make your airflow less efficient.
  • Keep your fireplace flue closed unless you’re using it.
  • Check your windows and doors for leaks. Caulk or add weather stripping to provide a tighter seal.
  • If your windows are old or seriously leaky, consider upgrading to energy efficient windows.
  • Use insulating drapes and shades to hold the cool in.
  • Wrap your water heater tank with a special insulated blanket designed to help prevent the heat from escaping.
  • Reduce your water heater temperature down to 110 or 120 degrees (140 is usually the default temp).
  • An on-demand (tankless) water heater can also save money in the long run, while delivering hot water just when you need it.
  • Add insulation to your attic, crawlspace or other areas that aren’t well-insulated.
  • When it’s time to decorate for the holidays, LED lights are more efficient than old-style lights.

Even if you don’t have time to implement all items on this list, every little bit helps when it comes to energy conservation and financial savings.
